Hub Heroes…Jamie Broadley

Tuesday, December 15, 2020

With keen industry spidey senses Jamie Broadley is our latest Hub Hero. Today we chat with the Hub team leader about his 16 years in mortgages, dealing with children video bombing Zoom calls and the importance of team-work…

When did you join TML?

In Summer last year. It feels like longer – but in a good way! I’ve been in mortgages since I left school 16 years ago. I’ve worked with Nationwide Building Society, Clydesdale Bank and just before joining the TML team I was with Tesco Bank.

What’s your role at The Mortgage Lender?

I’m the business development Hub team leader. I manage a fantastic team of experienced telephone business development managers and help them support brokers.

Do you have any mortgage industry qualifications?

Yes, I’ve got a CeMap qualification. Two members of my team of telephone business development managers, Reeta and Tatyana, have just completed their qualifications too. It’s brought back memories of what it was like to juggle working, studying and being a new dad.

I always say that every day at TML is a school day because you’re always learning new things. The cases we handle aren’t always vanilla, they are often complex and require the telephone business development managers to not only have an exceptional understanding of criteria but also the ability to deal with really unique scenarios and broker challenges. Every call they pick up comes with something completely new. That’s a skill that you can’t achieve through qualifications alone.

What do you enjoy most about working at The Mortgage Lender?

That you get back what you put in. If you work hard and do a good job you’re rewarded and appreciated. And that there is a real team spirit – I’d only been in the business for around a week when I saw the chief operating officer, Hugh Meechan, drop everything to help out on a complex case one of the Hub team was working with. That said a lot to me about how the business works and that the focus is to work together to get the best result for the broker and customer.

During the pandemic while we’ve been working from home productivity levels have gone through the roof – even with my six-year old occasionally joining Zoom meetings to ask if she can have a piece of fruit! We’re all invested in this business and proud to be a part of it.

What are the most important skills for your role and why?

I’ve worked on all sides of the mortgage process so I think it’s given me the ability to look at all scenarios, regardless of how unique or unusual, pragmatically.

What are the most important skills that all your Hub members need to have?

Experience and knowledge are clearly so important, especially at The Mortgage Lender. But, beyond that personality really does go a long way. People want to work with people they like and are easy to work with. The ability to build trusted relationships is so important to the broker, they need to know that they have a team they can trust when dealing with TML and I truly believe we have that.

Who would you love to receive a phone call from and why?

It’s a bit of a random one, but being a Heart of Midlothian supporter it would have to be the former owner, Vladimir Romanov. The stories that have come out about this guy are incredible – he lives in a submarine, he used witch doctors to treat the club’s players and he gloved up for a pre-match box with the team’s striker. The stories he would have!

Tell us something surprising about you?

That I’m into heavy metal music – I don’t think it’s all that surprising, but people seem to be when they find out.
